Huddersfield Friend directs two anti-fracking films

Chayley Collis, of Huddersfield Meeting, has directed two films for the group 'No Faith in Fracking'

The interfaith group No Faith in Fracking, which includes many Quakers, has made two short films to encourage people to join the anti-fracking movement.

The films, directed by Huddersfield Quaker Chayley Collis, show a selection of Friends speaking from the regular interfaith events at the Cuadrilla fracking site at Preston New Road, Lancashire about their testimonies to protect the planet by resisting plans to frack for shale gas.

Chayley Collis told the Friend: ‘I’m not a professional filmmaker but I wanted to make a film to encourage people to come. We’ve had a really nice response so far, and people really appreciate our presence at the site. They value the silence and energy we bring, because there can be a lot of confrontation.’

Several Huddersfield Friends have also been involved in Friends of the Earth protests against Barclays Bank which, according to Chayley Collis, has a large stake in Third Energy, the company behind the fracking plans at Kirby Misperton in North Yorkshire.

Third Energy’s finances are currently being investigated, after its delayed 2016 accounts showed a loss of £3.4 million. Energy secretary Greg Clark ordered the start of drilling at Kirby Misperton to be put on hold pending an investigation into the company’s ‘financial resilience’.

Chayley Collis said: ’The Barclays protest felt good as it feels that things are shifting. Some customers have written to the bank while others have closed accounts, and Third Energy have taken away some fracking equipment.’
