George Gorman Lecture: Equality

Tara Craig reports on Jessica Metheringham’s George Gorman Lecture

Equality was chosen by Jessica Metheringham, parliamentary engagement officer for Quakers in Britain, as the theme for this year’s George Gorman Lecture, which was delivered in the Big Top on Monday evening.

Jessica told Friends that she had chosen to speak on equality as we are at risk of taking it for granted. As a concept, it is also less straightforward than we might assume.

While Quakers have historically spoken out about and sought equality, ‘we have as many taboos as others’, Jessica said, naming class, education and intelligence.
