Esther McConnell discusses Junior Yearly Meeting

This year Junior Yearly Meeting (JYM) will take place as an integral part of Yearly Meeting Gathering (YMG); this has resulted in many changes to the previous four-day format. First, at just over a week the event is double the length. Although creating a lot of work for the arrangements committee and staff team, this extension has allowed for a greater development of this years’ theme plus stacks more activities, personal exploration and fun. Second, JYM will be a community within a much wider YMG community. To ensure this overlapping does not disrupt the quality of either, JYM-ers will take part in some sessions, worship and activities with YMG and some as a JYM group. The third key difference is the number of participants, which will be smaller than previous years at around 100. Participants are aged between fifteen and eighteen and are, for the most part, representatives of Area Meetings. Unfortunately fewer people can come this year, but hopefully those that do will be able to engage in a much stronger community, developing friendships over the week.
