Meeting house to participate in the Open City weekend

by The Friend Newsdesk 21st September 2012

Winchmore Hill Meeting House is participating in Open City, (London Open House), 22 to 23 September, the annual event that encourages visits to sites of architectural and historic interest. ‘We’re hoping to see hundreds of people this weekend who just didn’t know this treasure is here’, said spokesperson Stephen Cox.

Quakers originally met in a barn and built their first Meeting House in 1688, making them the oldest religious foundation in Winchmore Hill. The current Meeting House was built in 1790.

Quakers in Winchmore Hill have launched a £33,000 public appeal for urgent works on their historic, Grade II listed Meeting House and its garden and burial grounds. Refreshments and guides will be available on both afternoons.
