A few years ago, when I was serving as a trustee of the Quaker Tapestry, we engaged market researchers to assist us in improving the number of people coming in through the doors at Kendal. They told us that the two words that most turned people off were ‘Quaker’ and ‘Tapestry’. We also employed, for a while, a fundraiser who pointed out to us the difficulties in achieving grants when so many were dependent upon matched funding and so much of that matching support now came from the National Lottery.

It is still called the Quaker Tapestry (although the word ‘exhibition’, which has positive overtones, has been added), and, without Lottery funding, is heavily dependent on the generosity of Friends – alive and dead – for its continuing witness to the world.
