Warrington Peace Centre is to be transformed into an education centre for youngsters with special educational needs

Friends have welcomed plans for new educational facilities at the Warrington Peace Centre in Cheshire. The centre was set up by the Tim Parry Johnathan Ball Foundation and named after two boys who died in the 1993 IRA bombing in the town.

Warrington Borough Council is buying the building to transform it into an educational centre for youngsters with post-sixteen and post-nineteen special educational needs (SEN).

Kate Conway, from Warrington Meeting, told the Friend that the plans could fill much-needed gaps in the provision of SEN education. ‘I believe Warrington council is scrambling to provide more SEN spaces. While not unique to Warrington, the provision for SEN students is very poor and under-funded. The trauma for children forced into mainstream school without the right support is devastating.’

Peace campaigner Colin Parry has implored the council to retain the names of Tim Parry and Johnathan Ball for the centre. As the foundation vacated the building for work to begin, no assurances had been given that this would happen.
