Religious groups publish election resources for voters

Quakers have played a central role in the production of online resources to empower voters ahead of this year’s general election.  The resources, produced in conjunction with ten other churches, are intended ‘to help Christians engage with a range of important issues facing our country, however they may decide to vote’.

The eleven churches stress that faith-based organisations can play an important role in political debate. Churches often host hustings meetings, while candidates may seek to whip up support from religious communities.

Central to the resources, which can be found at www.churcheselection.org.uk, is the briefing ‘Faith in Politics’, which provides summaries of a range of current issues. Topics such as economics, health, poverty, peace and migration are each covered on an A4 page. The churches say that they are seeking to set out facts and controversies rather than to impose a ‘party line’.

‘The fact that the churches have worked together to provide these resources is a strong statement in itself,’ said Bob Fyffe, general secretary of Churches Together in Britain and Ireland.

The general election must be held by 3 June at the latest, and is widely expected to take place on 6 May.
