A new course is heralded as a ‘milestone in making peace education more accessible’

The peace education team for Britain Yearly Meeting (BYM) launched an online course with the Open University (OU) on 5 February.

The free self-study course, ‘Principles and practices of peace education’, is hosted on the OU’s learning platform OpenLearn and explores how peace can be fostered in classrooms.

As the OU’s first peace education course, Quakers have heralded it as a ‘milestone in making peace education more accessible’.

Isabel Cartwright, from BYM’s peace education team, told the Friend she was ‘delighted’ with the wide range of participants at a later online launch event on 12 February. ‘We had contributions from young mediators who talked about what it meant to them to help their peers resolve conflict and feel happier. Peacemakers led an “empathy footsteps” activity, and Development Education Centre South Yorkshire facilitated an activity about non-violence. A teacher also spoke about the importance of supporting young people to explore difficult topics like war.’

The course was supported by Quaker Lucy Henning, from the OU, who made the course possible, added Isabel.
