Kenyan Quakers call for calm
Friends in Kenya have asked for Quakers around the world to upload them
Quakers in Kenya are calling on Friends in Britain and around the world to uphold them as the political crisis in their country deepens.
A second presidential election in as many months was due to be held on 26 October, but at the time of going to press there was uncertainty as to whether it would take place after opposition candidate Raila Odinga withdrew. There have been clashes and deaths in the lead up to the vote and there is fear of more violence.
John Muhanji, the Friends United Meeting Mission director in Kenya, said in a statement: ‘We are calling upon all Quakers and Christians to go down on their knees and pray for this nation. We are facing a crisis that is more serious than what we had in 2007-08… That violence was not planned but this one is planned.
‘What would a Quaker who believes in integrity, honesty, peace and justice, equality, truth and community do in such a situation? We are calling to all Friends worldwide to stand with Kenya at this time of uncertainty.’
