From camping to Kendal
Tents unfurled, deck chairs unfolded, picnics unpacked… yes, the Quaker Campers have been at it again!
Fifty Friends, aged from one to seventy-ish, came together in a field at Barn Farm in the Peak District from 27 July until 3 August for Quaker fellowship and fun. Chris Edwards got in touch with Eye to share the highlights from their week:
‘Each day started with a fifteen-minute Meeting for Worship, after which plans were made for outings to nearby attractions (stately homes, museums, caves, swimming), walks, bike rides or just relaxing at the campsite. In the evenings, activities included a rounders match, entertainments and the traditional shared pudding night, bubble blowing and just sitting talking and enjoying each other’s company. The children enjoyed the playground, which was in the corner of our field.’
Their gathering was bracketed by some memorable weather as Chris noted that their ‘first and last nights were marked by thunderstorms and torrential rain but spirits were not dampened and we also had plenty of sunshine’.
The Quaker Campers are an informal group of Friends who (the clue is in the name) enjoy camping together. Fellow camping enthusiasts whose interest is piqued can contact Yvonne Dickson, clerk of the group, via yhq100@hotmail.com.
Kendal kids
Is there something in the air at Kendal?
In 1939 Kendal Children’s Meeting performed a play based on the story of the children of Reading Meeting (pictured).
The girl holding the baby was Nancy Gawith who married Brian Walker. He became director of Oxfam. The girl on the right was Anne Milner who married Hugh Faulkner. He became director of Help the Aged. Anne is currently honorary director of the CFS Research Foundation.
