Quaker climate campaigners urge Friends to hold declarations of climate emergency to account

Quaker climate campaigners have urged Friends to work together to ensure climate emergency declarations are held to account. According to Zero Carbon Britain (ZCB), fifty per cent of local authorities have declared a climate emergency but few have produced a plan of action. Chris Martin, from Central England Quakers, who campaigned for Birmingham City Council to declare an emergency, told the Friend: ‘2020 will be a critical year for climate justice and action in our work as Quakers. Over the last twelve months… local authorities have taken a variety of steps to match declarations with firm actions, ranging from doing little to holding Citizens’ Assemblies (such as in Oxford). It is becoming widely recognised that cities have a key role to play.’
