Like many people, I felt physically ill when I heard the news on the morning of 24 June. I had to lie down for half an hour. Part of the shock was just how much it affected me. But perhaps we should be grateful for the Brexit vote as a lightning flash, revealing something of the social landscape. Destructive as it seems, it could help to open up new ways forward.
