Call for proactive government approach towards discouraging excessive drinking
The impact of a report urging more government action to curb the UK’s drinking culture may be lost in pre-election news coverage and the controversy over mephedrone. The Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) called for tough measures to combat alcohol abuse in a report submitted to ministers last year – but not published by the government until 29 March.
On the same day, ministers backed ACMD’s proposal for a ban on mephedrone, known as ‘meow meow’, which hit the headlines following the deaths of two teenagers (see ‘Education key to tackling new drugs challenge, says QAAD’, 24 March). The focus on mephedrone meant that the media overlooked the alcohol report.
