Craig Barnett discusses the impact Friends have had
City of Sanctuary is a grassroots movement that brings together local organisations to make their town or city a recognised place of welcome and safety for people claiming sanctuary in the UK.
When I started to explore the idea of Sheffield as a City of Sanctuary in 2005, Sheffield Friends organised a Meeting for Clearness to test whether this was a genuine Concern. The Meeting then became one of the first organisations in the city to publicly support the movement, at the time when it was still a completely untried and controversial proposal.
Starting a grassroots movement of support for people who are so often reviled and excluded is a bold and controversial act.
