Kenyan disputes claims around treatment of gay pastor
Kenyan Friends’ approach to sexuality has come under the international spotlight, following the case of Noah Kellum, a gay Kenyan Quaker and former pastor. Noah says that he was forced out of his post after coming out as gay, but the Yearly Meeting involved is disputing the accuracy of his statements.
Unlike most British Quakers – who recently decided to carry out same-sex marriages – the majority of Kenyan Friends regard homosexuality as unethical. Certain other Kenyan churches respond to homosexuality with condemnation or accusations of demonic possession, but Kenyan Friends are keen to emphasise that they see gay people as in need of help and support.
